They’ll give you all the feels
In today’s world of music, the billboards are dominated by the hip and happening musicians, EDM and techno-filled kaleidoscope tracks. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with jamming to off-the-chart dance tunes and enjoying some on-point beat drops. But, if you ever find yourself in bed, nostalgically scrolling through your old photographs or in need of clearing your head, hardcore EDM or rap songs might not match the feels.
Realising this, we dug out some old CDs and compiled a few of our faves. Some are now forgotten or underrated, mixed with some new slow-flow hits that’ll take you back in time.
ONE YEAR OF LOVE BY QUEEN
Released in 1986 from their album A Kind Of Magic, this is one of the most underrated rock songs from the 80s. The lyrics are beautiful and the music mixed with the passion of Freddie Mercury’s voice, just speaks right to your heart.
DON’T GIVE ME THOSE EYES BY JAMES BLUNT
Taken from The Afterlove, Blunt’s fifth studio album, this song will have shivers running down your spine.
“Don’t give me those eyes ‘cause you know me and I can’t say no to you
We can’t have each other even if we wanted to
In another life, darling, I’ll do anything to be with you”
The lyrics will tug at your heart and take you back to the one you couldn’t have.
WHISPER IN THE DARK BY DIONNE WARWICK
Released in 1985, this is one of Warwick’s best singles. The instruments come together perfectly, particularly the soft touch of percussion that resonates in the background. The words will echo in your heart leaving you yearning for your other half.
PICTURE OF YOU BY THE CURE
Their fourth and final album, Disintegration, included this song that was voted the 278th on Rolling Stone’s 500 greatest songs of all times in 2011. The post-punk rock music will resonate in your body taking you back to your childhood sweetheart and your innocent summer romance.
I DON’T WANNA FIGHT BY TINA TURNER
Hitting the charts as soon as it released in 1993, this was the soundtrack for Turner’s autobiographical film, What’s Love Got To Do With It. This iconic song will remind you all over again why you love Soul Rhythm and Blues (R&B) in the first place.
BELIEF BY GAVIN DEGRAW
“Tonight, you arrested my mind, When you came to my defense
With a knife in the shape of your mouth, In the form of your body, With the wrath of a god
Oh, you stood by me, belief”
These words will ring in your ears throughout the day and make you believe again. This underrated pop-rock song which released in 2003 and appears on his album, Chariot, is a must-listen.
ALL MY ROADS BY COLLIN RAYE
Raye’s single that appeared on his album, The Walls Come Down allows you to tell your other half everything you struggle to say. You have to go through a couple of wrongs to know and appreciate the right. Plus, if you’re looking for the perfect wedding song that says exactly that, well you just found it!
LLORO POR TI BY ENRIQUE IGLESIAS
This contemporary R&B Spanish song that appears on his album, La Revolucion, is a definite must listen. Even if you don’t understand the language, close your eyes and feel the emotion. Although it was tossed under his billboard hits, this song will awaken emotions you haven’t felt in a long time.
SLEEPS WITH BUTTERFLIES BY TORI AMOS
Written and recorded by the ‘sort of a fairytale’ singer, this baroque pop song released in 2005. Being recorded as just a digital download, it didn’t attract a lot of attention. Give it a listen to enjoy the synchronization of all instruments coming together with her unique voice. You’ll know what we mean.
JIKA CINTA DIA BY GEISHA
Willing to explore songs in other languages? Give this track a listen. It appeared in the group’s album Anugrah Terindah and is simply beautiful. There’s something about Indonesian music that can transform you into a fairytale and make you feel like you’re floating on cloud nine.
HOW DO I BREATHE BY MARIO
This R&B song hit the Billboard Top 100 as soon as it came out in 2007. This perfect collaboration of instruments together with Mario’s soft sensual voice is bound to get you moving…straight into bae’s arms. Who knows, one thing might lead to another!
KNOWING ME KNOWING YOU BY ABBA
Released in 1977, this pop song became one of their most successful hits bursting through the charts in a blink of an eye. Taking you back to the 70s, you’ll be reminded of how hard and painful a breakup is no matter the circumstances.
NO ME AMES BY JENIFER LOPEZ AND MARC ANTHONY
Hitting number 1 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs, this track was first composed in Italian and later translated into Spanish as per Anthony’s request. Then, the duo recorded it for Lopez’s album, On The 6. The record talks about the complications of a relationship, and we’re certain you’ll be feeling a whirlwind of emotions.
I CAN’T MAKE YOU LOVE ME BY GEORGE MICHAEL (COVER)
Originally recorded by Bonnie Raitt in 1991, this single was later covered by George Michael in 1997. It ranked number 3 on the UK Singles Chart and for good reason!
FIRE ON FIRE BY SAM SMITH
“Fire on fire, we’re normally killers
With this much desire, together, we’re winners
They say that we’re out of control and some say we’re sinners
But don’t let them ruin our beautiful rhythms
Cause when you unfold me and tell me you love me
And look in my eyes
You are perfection, my only direction
It’s fire on fire”
Recorded as the soundtrack for the Netflix adaptation of Watership Down in 2018, these words will ignite an unexplainable passion in you.
