Why ‘Always Be My Maybe’ Is The Hottest New Rom-Com of 2019

Sasha Tran…. can I hold your purse for you?

Ladies, hear me out!

If I asked you if you had a childhood friend, I bet you’re thinking about someone special. You’ve probably already lost touch with them, but they’ll forever be the what if of your past. I know you also sometimes play out scenarios where you run into him while he’s covered in oil because he likes fixing engines for a living. And, maybe, you take a ride on his motorcycle with him and he still smells like strawberries and… okay, I’m definitely getting off track here—this is in no way about me. I was going to connect the dots like a maestro and say “it might not have happened for you yet—but that’s exactly what Always Be My Maybe is about”, but I got distracted by strawberries and motorcycles.

If you haven’t watched #AlwaysBeMyMaybe yet, I suggest you get to it tonight before all your co-workers discuss the big spoiler at work tomorrow!

If you haven’t thought about your childhood bestie in a while, you’ll find yourself stalking their social media after approximately 1 hour and 42 minutes.

Marcus Kim (Randall Park) and Sasha Tran (Ali Wong) haven’t seen each other in 15 years until (wait for it!)— they do. And, hoo boy, do they still have chemistry!

Without giving too much away, here are my thoughts on Netflix’s latest Rom-Com.

Casting and Direction

There’s something electrifying about the relationship that Fresh Off The Boat’s Randall Park and stand-up comedian Ali Wong (who has also written for FOTB) are able to bring to the screen. They also co-wrote the screenplay for the movie alongside screenwriter Michael Golamco.

#AlwaysBeMyMaybe opens in select theaters TODAY! (And on @netflix on Friday!) — See the great Ali Wong and I play authentic looking teenagers!

Making her directorial debut in the film is Nahnatchka Khan who’s also a producer on Fresh Off The Boat.

If you’re an (amateur) rom-com expert like me, you know there’s bound to be another love interest for your mechanic would-be-soulmate (don’t give me that look, this is all totally metaphorical). They might be “better” than you (played by Daniel Dae Kim and Keanu Reeves), or you know you could totally take them in a fight (Vivian Bang will forever be the perfect casting choice for ‘Asian-American woman with dreadlocks’).

Characters and Story-line

Plot-wise it doesn’t take much to realize that Always Be My Maybe isn’t trying to branch out of rom-com tropes. I think that’s the beauty of it. I have a fairly good idea of how everything will pan out but my interest is still held because of the characters I meet on the way.

Let me just take a second to address the fact that most of the cast is Asian-American. It’s very easy to get diversity wrong in films, especially when it comes to the older generation. Often POC parents are one dimensional. So it was nice to see Sasha’s parents taking responsibility for not being there for her during her childhood, and Marcus’s dad getting a second chance at love.

James Saito is a national treasure. Thank you for playing Harry with so much warmth, so much soul.

Let’s not forget Keanu Reeve’s infamous cameo.

There’s something gratifying about an actor who can mock himself. Keanu’s appearance is not only the most profound section of the film (you won’t be able to stop watching his meme-worthy entrance), he’s also the inspiration behind the best beat in the soundtrack

Soundtrack

Here’s a list of songs by the band from Always Be My Maybe. Enjoy!
