The 101 On Creating A Capsule Wardrobe

Are you ready for a “less is more” approach?

Sustainability is all the rage right now. It’s receiving a whole lot of attention, but with no significant impact just yet. It’s really up to us as millennials and Gen Zs to pave the way and take a stand. Deep down, we all want to play a role in creating a greener future and it starts with small, consistent steps forward. “How do I do this?” you may ask. Sustainability needs to be a part of everything you do, including fashion. It’s an industry that’s considered the second largest polluter in the world!! Yikes! But, we get it — being more conscious and finding ways to be greener in this industry is easier said than done. That’s why we’re here to help!

Think of style icons like Meghan Markle, Angelina Jolie, Michelle Obama, Emma Watson and Amal Clooney. They’ve pretty much figured out the key to a versatile closet filled with interchangeable, quality pieces. Want in on how to do this? Follow our 3-step guide and slay the game! You’re welcome!

Step 1: List it

Prepare a list of clothing items that covers your daily activities. You’re essentially looking at work attire and casual pieces. Exclude clothes for special occasions, accessories, footwear and workout items (but, if you want to be a true minimalist, feel free to include them as well!). Ideally, keep your list under 40 pieces. You basically need to experiment. Think about your sense of fashion, what colour palettes and patterns you love, pay attention to quality and how easy each item can mixed and matched.

To push you in the right direction, here’s a sample capsule wardrobe that can serve as a guide. But remember, your capsule wardrobe should be customised for just you!

Sample Capsule Wardrobe

  • 10 blouses
  • 10 pants (including denims, office wear and summer pants)
  • 7 office wear tops
  • 5 shirts
  • 3 summer dresses
  • 2 blazers
  • 1 skirt
  • Total: 38 Items

Tip: Don’t complicate it. Avoid fast fashion items and focus on essentials and investment pieces such as a pair of Levi jeans or a Lovi sarong.

Step 2: Cleanse your closet

Now that your list is ready, review the clothes in your cupboard. Identify items from your current collection that would work great for your new capsule wardrobe. Make a note of what you have and don’t have.

Tip: If you haven’t worn an item for 3 months or more, it’s best not to include it.

Step 3: Build your capsule wardrobe

Now all you’ve got to do is build your capsule wardrobe! You can shop smart because now you’ll know exactly what to buy (and avoid any future confessions of a shopaholic to boot!). Remember to pay special attention to basic pieces – quality is what you’re looking for!

Tip: Don’t throw out your old or excess clothes. You can recycle or donate them to charity.

You’re all set to bring your A game with the perfect wardrobe. Here’s to a sustainable you for a sustainable planet!
