Poya Day Chills in Unawatuna!

Here’s to making sure you don’t waste away that rare midweek holiday!

A day off from the hustle and bustle of Colombo, needless to say, is always welcome. So when the month’s been gifted with an extra day off, you know it would be a shame to just let it pass you by, lazing away in bed. Exploring the cultural triangle, driving through the jungles and hiking up chilly hills is a bit of a stretch unless your boss is feeling generous and willing to give you the rest of the week off. With the Southern Expressway however, the beaches down south are just a hop, skip and a jump away!

Once you’ve picked a beach and found the best spot on the beach, just as you’re getting comfortable under your umbrella with your latest Cosmo in hand you’ll notice something missing…a plate of crispy hot butter cuttlefish on the side of course!

The Una Beach strip’s got a variety of restaurants, mostly specializing in seafood. Western cuisine can be a hit or a miss at most of these places but the Sri Lankan Chinese and the fresh seafood is quite on point and pairs perfectly with that piña colada you’ve been craving! Speaking of summertime cocktails, Toddy by Hoppa is ideal if you’re looking for a nice drink and some delectable bites on the beach with a little shisha as well. Towards the evening a few places like Lucky Tuna and Full Moon Resort start up a fresh grill / BBQ service where you can pick from the display of fresh catches of the day and have it cooked up any way you like. Another evening treat down the Wella Dewala Road is also the roti from the little roadside kadey. A personal fave has got to be the chocolate and banana roti, but there are plenty of yummy savoury options too!

If you’re going to be at Dalawella Beach, there’s no place better than Wijaya Beach for the munchies. The wood-fire oven at the entrance produces some of the best pizzas to be devoured in Sri Lanka. With a straightforward menu and prices ranging between Rs. 1,200-2,000 for a thin crust pizza loaded with toppings of your choice, Wijaya Beach should definitely be a compulsory stop on your itinerary. The ambiance is pretty chill too so you can enjoy your meal overlooking the beach, amidst the relaxing sea breeze.

Looking for some great coffee and perhaps some all-day breakfast to fuel up? Skinny Tom’s Deli by Bedspace Una has got you covered. They’ve got hoppers, pancakes, paninis, quiches-all the best brunch delights under one roof along with an array of teas, coffees, shakes and other blends.

Grab your copy of our October 2018 issue to find out more about how you can utilize a day away in Una!
