Everything you need to be prepared
There’s plenty of places to hike in Sri Lanka but what do you carry while going on a hike? We’re here to give you the lowdown on a couple hiking essentials.
Water and Snacks
Even when hiking short distances, it’s always a good idea to keep some snacks and a bottle of water on hand. Granola bars, trail mix, various nuts are a great way to keep your energy up on the trek without bloating yourself. If you’re feeling a bit more fruity than nutty, throw an apple or two into your backpack to keep you energised.
Sunscreen and Bug Spray
It will most likely be a bright, sunny day you pick for the hike and sunscreen is extremely important, not only to keep you from nasty burns but the harmful rays of the sun, too.
Here in Sri Lanka, there is no lack of insects buzzing around and to avoid getting bitten and sucked on throughout the journey, it is wise to travel with some bug spray.
Wet wipes or baby wipes
You’ll be sure to sweat and drip as you trek the mountains and instead of feeling entirely gross for the whole journey, pack a small packet of wet wipes to wipe down a sweaty face or even to clean a wound before putting on a Band-Aid.
It is easy to hurt yourself while trekking, especially if the hike is on rugged terrain. Keeping a small supply of Band-Aids on hand is never a bad idea.
GPS / Maps
If you aren’t travelling with a tour guide or someone who knows the area well, be sure to pack a map of the area or use Google maps from your phone. However, if you are using a phone we’d suggest packing a power bank to make sure you don’t run out of battery. You never know if your 1-hour hike will turn into a 3-hour hike.
