Hint: It’s totally work appropriate.
There’s no denying that a smokey eye is timeless and sexy. Whether it’s dark-like-your-soul black, a warm brown or even an OTT blue, you can’t go wrong with a smoked-out look. But, if you’re shying away from this simply because you think it’s something a MUA can only do or because you think it’s a little out of your skill-set, we’re here to prove you wrong. It’s easy AF and totally doable (even in the morning rush, promise!). All you have to do is keep our 4-step smokey mantra in mind and blend, blend, blend! That’s key, and remember, practice makes perfect!
Before you get started, remember to moisturize. And, this is optional, but to give your eyes a base to work with, dab some concealer on your lids.
Apply a black pencil liner to your upper lash line like you would when putting on your regular eyeliner.
Cosmo tip: Before lining your eyes, warm your product by doing a little scribble on your hand (body heat does the trick here!) or direct your blow drier on the tip for a few seconds. Trust us, this’ll be a life saver when it comes to blending.
Grab a pencil brush (something round and small enough to get into your lash line) and pick up a brown eye shadow and smudge away! Blend upwards (from the lash line and into the crease). Use small amounts of shadow at a time to avoid a panda-esq look!
Cosmo Tip: If you don’t have a blending brush handy, use the sponge-tipped applicator that comes with most make-up palates. And, the brown shade makes the smokey look more work appropriate and helps seamlessly blend the black shades into the natural colour of your lids. So, never forget this transition shade!
Intensify the look a little more by picking up a wee bit of black shadow and blend some more!
Using either the same brush or sponge-tipped applicator, drag the brown shadow down the bottom lash line and, yup, you guess it, blend!
Cosmo Tip: You can apply your black pencil eye liner into your water line for further intensity and that cool slept in look.
To top off the look, do your usual top liner-mascara routine. For a bit of extra oomph (completely optional!), add a shimmery shade in the inner corner of your eyes (tear duct.)
Told you it’s easy-peasy lemon-squeezy!
