There are many kinds of books: There are the ones you pick up at the end of a long day for light entertainment, those you read when you want suspense and mystery, and then there are the books that you revisit whenever you want a healthy dose of confidence and inspiration. We talked to the #bossbabes of CosmoSL to let all you gals in on their secret stashes of daily motivation.

The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay

“The book is set in South Africa during the 1930’s and the protagonist is a young boy called ‘Peekay’ who is bullied throughout his life. Peekay shows readers that being bullied doesn’t always have to bring you down; it can certainly make you a stronger person in the end. This riveting read is a story about underdogs, revenge, racism, violence, injustice, perseverance and the power just one person can muster to overcome any obstacle in his (or her) path. Although published in 1989, Courtenay’s book is still socially relevant today. It’ll have you crying, laughing and cheering Peekay on, while waking you up to the issues still prevalent in modern day society. A must-read for anyone looking for a little inspiration.”

PS: For ardent movie fans, the movie of the same name was released in 1992 starring Morgan Freeman, Daniel Craig and Stephen Dorff.

Wonder by R.J. Palacio

“This book is simply a wonderful treat! If you’re someone who has a lot of insecurities about your looks, Auggie’s character will inspire you to look within yourself. Plus, there’s a beautiful message for the bullies and the bullied which I believe is what makes this book so powerful. It’s categorized as a children’s novel but I think it’s one that can transcend age. I loved it because it made me open my eyes and appreciate so much about myself, friends and family.”

PS: The movie is about to come out but, I recommend reading the book first. Always!

Read of the day ❤️

“I’m not a fan of chick-lit and at first glance, it looked exactly like one and I was reluctant to read it. It seemed to be a typical girly story, down to the pink, glittery cover (I hate pink!). However, curiosity got the better of me and I’m so glad it did! The main character was very relatable with her insecurities, struggles to face reality and peer pressure. It’s a realistic tale of love and life coupled with the classic elements of boyfriend trouble, romance and drama. After I was done, I realized that I needed to be kinder to myself, and stop hunting for perfection all the time. Over time, I’ve been able to tell myself that it’s okay to take risks, and just go all out to achieve my goals. So, I definitely recommend this amazing book to all my Cosmo gals!”

The Harry Potter Series by J.K Rowling

Yes, the Harry Potter series inspires and gives me confidence whenever I sit down to devour it. It’s safe to say there’s no one on this tiny island that doesn’t know the story of the boy with the lightning-shaped scar who goes on to defeat the evil wizard. More than Harry’s story, the evolution of J.K Rowling throughout this wildly successful franchise, continues to inspire me every day. She went from being a single-mom, struggling to raise her child to one of the most successful and powerful writers in the world within the span of five years. I believe her rags-to-riches story that started with her penning down a bed time story she made up about magic, wizards and spells, all the while struggling with depression, shows the immense power that a person has within oneself. Rowling constantly reminds me that if you put your mind to it, nothing is impossible! What’s more, no one thought a story about an orphaned boy that can fly on a magic broom would be a good idea until Harry Potter happened. Need I say more?
