For the last time: Dolls are bad.
In case you had forgotten that a new Annabelle movie was coming out this year, there’s now a new trailer to remind you that everyone’s least favorite doll will soon be back. The new trailer for Annabelle: Creation somehow manages to be scarier than the first one and also gives a little more backstory. After a couple’s young daughter dies in a car accident, they pray to see her again. At first, the ghostly sightings are benign, but then the spirit asks to move into the doll. “We soon realized it wasn’t our daughter,” says the mother.
Look, I’m not here to victim-blame people who are being haunted by childlike demonic spirits, but if you initiate contact with the ghost of your dead daughter, you’re basically asking for it. You don’t leave your door unlocked, so people can walk right in and steal your laptop, do you? No. So why would you let an unknown spirit take up residence in a creepy doll that for some reason you keep in your home despite the fact that it’s ugly and terrifying? As Tony Spera, son-in-law of the real-life Warrens (eventual caretakers of the real-life Annabelle) puts it, “Don’t dabble.” Listen to the man who curates an occult museum! He’s trying to help you out.
