Hint: enough that it's worth getting extra kip
As you might already know too well, not getting enough sleep is pretty bad for your body. It can leave you grumpy, with fatigued skin and a cloudy head – and as researchers at King’s College London have discovered, a wider waistline, too.
In a new study conducted by scientists at the university, research showed that sleep deprivation makes us eat more than we normally would – presumably down to the fact we turn to food to wake us up because we haven’t had enough kip.
According to a meta-analysis of 11 small studies – meaning scientists conducted 11 studies and later combined all the data – not getting enough sleep leads people to eat 385 additional calories the following day.
And considering the average woman eats around 2000 calories per day to maintain a healthy weight, that constitutes to 20% more calories consumed on the days when people are tired.
Yeah, that’s a LOT.
The research also showed that sleep deprived people were less likely to be active enough to burn off the additional calories, which makes sense, and that they were more likely to reach for foods high in fats rather than protein.
Dr. Gerda Pot, senior author from the Diabetes & Nutritional Sciences Division at King’s College London and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, explained:
The main cause of obesity is an imbalance between calorie intake and expenditure and this study adds to accumulating evidence that sleep deprivation could contribute to this imbalance. So there may be some truth in the saying ‘early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy and wise’… Reduced sleep is one of the most common and potentially modifiable health risks in today’s society in which chronic sleep loss is becoming more common.
