Step into grandeur
Where is it?
Located on the Pitaratmalie Estate, part of the vast Agarapatana Plantation, Thotalagala is a planter’s bungalow, managed by Maitland & Knox Heritage Hotels. Built in the 19th century, Thotalagala is surrounded by 20 acres of sprawling gardens, with the Haputale hills behind boasting 4,000 hectares of tea.
What are the rooms like?
Take your pick of 7 themed rooms, each named after prominent figures who resided in the Uva Province back in the heyday and played an important role in its development. James Taylor or Major Rogers? Whichever personality you’re in the mood for, ladies!
Major Rogers Rev. Walter Senior Sir Thomas Lipton
Can I be pampered?
Sun Salute: Wake for an early breakfast as you watch the sunrise or opt for sundowner cocktails instead. Either way, it’s definitely an experience!
Nightcap: Dine anywhere on the property and savour traditional, hearty plantation fare. Then retreat to Thotalagala’s teak-paneled smoking room for an after-dinner cognac.
Let’s talk about other activities…
Hike The Day. Whether it’s to a nearby creek or a longer trek to Lipton’s Seat, take advantage of the stunning scenery and embark on extensive explorations. For the wild at heart, opt for a guided expedition to Diyaluma Falls, Horton Plains or Adisham.
Tea Talk. Visit the Dambatenne tea factory and experience the intricate processes involved in the fermentation, rolling, drying, cutting, sieving and grading of tea, in addition to an authentic tea tasting experience.
Bonus: Condé Nast Traveler is a fan. The property is listed as one of a handful of must-visit luxury properties in SL and has been nominated for a 2017 Condé Nast Johansens Awards for Excellence as a Best Destination Hotel.
Who’s ready to head for the hills?!
