Taylor Swift Covered Calvin Harris’ ‘This Is What You Came For’

Last night, Taylor Swift performed her first and only gig for the entirety of 2016. It was at Formula 1’s U.S. Grand Prix Weekend in Austin, Texas. It was all very exciting.

Along with all her other, regular hits, Taylor Swift went ahead and did a stripped-back version of ‘This Is What You Came For’.

If you don’t know why this is a big deal, let us remind you.

‘This Is What You Came For’ is a Calvin Harris song that Taylor Swift co-wrote while the couple were still together. Initially, Taylor Swift’s involvement in the song was entirely secret, and Taylor had gone by the pseudonym Nils Sjoberg.

Then fans noticed Taylor’s backing vocals on the song, started suggesting that Taylor Swift might have had a hand in writing it, and Taylor’s rep confirmed her involvement, launching a bunch of news stories about the secret songwriting drama, which then caused Calvin Harris to go on a massive Twitter rant.

“She sings a little bit on it too,” wrote Calvin on Twitter at the time. “Amazing lyric writer and she smashed it as usual. I wrote the music, produced the song, arranged it and cut the vocals though. And initially she wanted it kept secret, hence the pseudonym.”

Then he brought Katy Perry into things, said he wouldn’t stand for Taylor making him look like the bad guy, and told Taylor to please focus on the positive aspects of her life.

And so, Taylor’s choice to sing this song is a pretty interesting one.

Is it a subtle jab at Calvin? A way for her to reassert that she played a role in its creations? A sign that she and Calvin might be on good terms again?
