There are rumours she won't make an appearance at all...
The MTV Video Music Awards are just around the corner, taking place tonight live from Madison Square Garden in New York City. And it’s always an entertaining awards ceremony to watch: it was the home of Britney and that snake, Lady Gaga’s meat dress and Miley Cyrus’ twerking. Oh, and the infamous “imma let you finish” drama of 2009.
And we know exactly where we’ve set our sights for this year’s entertainment: we’re looking at you, Taylor Swift. The thing is, there have been rumours flying about that she might not attend at all. Which would be a right disappointment.
While we were having vivid imaginations of Taylor having a run-in with her ex, Calvin Harris, or worse – with Kanye West, it seems we might be disappointed. The Wildest Dreams singer hasn’t actually been nominated for a single award this year (not because she’s being shunned by MTV, don’t worry, it’s just that she hasn’t released anything within the relevant time frame), which means she’d be heading home moonman-less even if she did turn up.
But that’s not the only reason her absence is rumoured: it turns out that Kanye West – who is famously not friends with Taylor at the moment (see what I did there) – has been given free reign over a four minute slot during the show. Now we all know Kanye. He’s not exactly shy and retiring. He will use those four minutes to create maximum drama and we’d be very surprised if Taylor didn’t play a part in it (involuntarily, of course, she never asked to be part of this narrative).
Having said that, we should probably remember that Taylor’s potential absense is all just speculation. It comes from the grape vine, and we know how reliable that can be…
So there’s still a very good chance Taylor could turn up, and imagine if Tom Hiddleston came too? That kind of drama is unmissable.
But where would she sit? According to Gina Esposito, the vice president for MTV music and talent, MTV has a full team of people whose jobs it is to work out the seating plan, and apparently everyone wants to sit with Taylor Swift. Oh, to be popular.
“She has so many good friends, and it was hard to figure out… because so many people were requesting to sit by her and sit with her. She’s often really requested,” Gina told Cosmopolitan.
We wouldn’t want all those people to be disappointed with a no-show now, would we?
There’s a group of optimistic people out there who’ve even started rumours that Taylor might not only turn up to the VMAs, but that she’ll appear on stage in a duet with Kanye West. IMAGINE. At least then we’d know for certain that they’d all just been trolling us big time and that, actually, Taylor had been a part of that narrative all along.
God, I can’t wait for tonight. This could turn out to be the best VMAs yet.
