It's a new era.
When I think back on the Barbies of my childhood, and I had a lot, every one of them looks the same. Different outfits, maybe, but other than that, they were utterly homogenous.
The Barbie of 2016 is nothing like that, especially with the announcement today that Barbie’s Fashionistas line will be getting three new body types: tall, curvy, and petite. With the original body type, that means there will be four total body types to choose from, along with seven skin tones and 22 different eye colors.
In a statement, senior vice president and global general manager for Barbie Evelyn Mazzocco said, “We are excited to literally be changing the face of the brand – these new dolls represent a line that is more reflective of the world girls see around them – the variety in body type, skin tones and style allows girls to find a doll that speaks to them.”
You can check out the new dolls at Barbie.com. They are also available to preorder starting today and are priced starting at $9.99.
Update 1/28, 9:30 a.m.: TIME’s cover story this week is an exclusive look at Mattel and the unveiling of the new Barbie. One of the most compelling parts of the story, written by Eliana Dockterman, is a look at the testing of Curvy Barbie.
The kids meeting Curvy Barbie describe the doll as “a little chubbier,” or spell out the word fat: “F, a, t” – but only when there are adults around.
“We see it a lot. The adult leaves the room and they undress the curvy Barbie and snicker a little bit,” senior director of global insights Tania Missad told TIME. “For me, it’s these moments where it just really sets in how important it is we do this. Over time I would love it if a girl wouldn’t snicker and just think of it as another beautiful doll.”
