Charming, smart, and, certainly easy on the eyes, Ayesh De Fonseka, Director at Tiesh dishes the deets. Here, he shares his staple pieces of jewellery, the birth of his son and his absolute travel essential.
Q/ What keeps you busy during the week?
A/ I typically spend the week taking care of the Tiesh head office in Kandy. It’s the tourism arm of the business, so my wife, Mihiri, and I prefer to spend most of our time there. But, because of the Colombo showroom and our friends in the city, we head back to the city at least once a week.
Q/ If you’re popping the question or planning your engagement and/or wedding, what stones should you choose?
A/ Blue sapphires! Sri Lanka has an amazing array of sapphires in not just blue, but also pink, yellow, orange and more, but diamonds still seem to be the first choice for engagement rings. Plus, wedding bands are mostly chosen to compliment the engagement ring, to be worn as a set by the lady.
Q/ Do you recommend a specific time of year to shop for jewellery?
A/ December is always a hit, as we have a lot of items on sale!
Q/ What’s the biggest personal change you’ve ever had to make?
A/ The moment we had our little boy, Dineth, last April! I’ve had to become a lot more responsible and make more mature decisions in life.
Q/ What’s the one travel essential, you always carry?
A/ Definitely a luggage scale! You see, Mihiri and I don’t travel light, so extra baggage is always an issue. Of course, it doesn’t help that we both love to shop, too!
Q/ You’re rarely seen without a lapel pin. How do you go about choosing one?
A/ Lapel pins have made a huge comeback over the last two years in men’s fashion. My advice is always to choose a piece that says something about your personality. I have a few in my collection, and the one I’m wearing today is from my favourite TV Show, Game Of Thrones. It’s called “The Hand Of The King.”
Q/ What’s the most romantic date you’ve ever been on?
A/ Mihiri and I love travelling, and in 2015, we went to Paris. One lovely evening, we dined close to the Eiffel tower, enjoying a lovely meal. Afterwards, we went to the Eiffel Tower to watch the lights show. It sounds mundane but it was truly a magical evening!
Q/ Are you doing anything fun for V-Day this year?
A/ You can’t go wrong with a nice dinner out followed by a movie!
